About Us

Captain Alony trains skippers and sailors to have the highest degree of professional training. We’ve developed advanced courses for a variety of sailing skills. The company owns new boats that are equipped with special gear for training purposes, and instructors with experience of tens of thousands of nautical miles.

How was the idea conceived?

Over the many years of living on the sea in a boat, visiting numerous countries, watching the boats come in and out of the harbor, lowering and raising their anchors and sails, and endless conversations with yacht skippers, it became apparent that the skippers’ inadequate level of professionalism harms the sailing experience. These shortcomings manifest in difficulties accessing the pier and the need for assistance of crew members who aren’t always skilled, the need for shift assistance in rough seas, and more. These have caused unnecessary stress for many skippers and as a result some of the crews don’t go back to work on a boat again. We believe that a skipper is judged by two main parameters: the safety of the voyage and the crew’s enjoyment, which require a very high degree of expertise.

The challenge

While competitive sailing has an organized training infrastructure throughout the active sail, the yacht cruise industry doesn’t offer proper training and advanced courses once the brief training period ends and the skipper gets their sailing license. The result is that the majority of yacht skippers only have the theoretical knowledge they received during their training for the sailing license, and the experience they accumulated since. There is usually a significant disparity between the required knowledge and skills needed for the sailing destinations and the knowledge the skippers actually have to perform this task. This is why we founded the advanced sailing school and developed the various courses.

The staff at the school

Oded Alony

Oded Zvi Alony was born in Haifa in 1967. Like other Haifa natives, Oded’s love of the sea originates from his childhood. Throughout his life and concurrent to his various endeavors, including six years in the Department of Jewish History and Thought at the University of Haifa and another two years at the Department of Jewish Philosophy at Bar-Ilan University, Oded always nurtured his relationship and love of the sea. When he was 15 years old, he was already a 2-star scuba diver, and at age 21 he had three stars. Hundreds of dives and countless voyages on a sailboat that he got from his brother when he was a youth made the sea an inseparable part of him. Over the years, his love became his profession. He has been a sailing instructor in the various theoretical and practical skipper license courses for years. In 2015 he took the plunge and moved to his boat, which he bought in France. He is now an active yachtmaster, single-handed sailor, and the owner/partner of Captain Alony – The Center for Advanced Sailing Courses.

Oded: “I absolutely love what I do. I get excited whenever I see the participants’ progress.”
