Advanced Sailing Course

Single Handed

The course trains the participant for single handed sailing on a sailing yacht. The course material includes: preparing a boat and adapting it to the task (the sailing destination, single handed/crew), plotting a course, unassisted docking, energy management, and using sails. The lack of a need for a crew makes the skipper much more professional.

Syllabus

Theory

1 – Navigation rules and regulations (The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972) – correcting common mistakes and completing the relevant material

2 – Sail handling – A: Adjusting the sails for single handed sailing, including cordage, types of sails, and auxiliary accessories
In this part we’ll learn about the fundamental differences in the choice of sails for sailing in a group and single handed sailing in a straight down wind, among others.
B: Maneuvering the sails in changing conditions without the assistance of a crew member

3 – Engine maneuvers – the principles of maneuvering an engine/motor In this part we will also cover changing the pivot point according to the motion of the water, bank effect, squats, preparing for access and sequence of actions in each of the access points; bow stern, port, and starboard.

4 – Mooring, planning, proper preparation and appropriate to the circumstances, lowering and lifting an anchor without the assistance of a crew member

5 – Cases and responses: In this part we will cover unique handling methods.

Practical

All participants will practice the theoretical material pertaining to the practical operation of the vessel, including:
Access points, lifting and lowering the sails, sailing

Remarks

It’s important to state that single handed sailing is a very advanced stage in sailing. This is an important course that adds a great deal of practical and theoretical knowledge, however it is not an exemption from practicing the material over and over again…

Admission Requirements

1 – 30 license and/or comparable RYA, ASA, IYT licenses or country/state license.
2 – Personal interview

**If a participant is found ineligible from a safety and/or social aspect during the course, he will be required to leave the course with immediate effect.

Schedule: 8 hours of sea training and one hour of classroom theory

Accommodations: Each participant will get a private cabin on the ship.
